Wielka Orkiestra Świątecznej Pomocy (The Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity) plays again – 9th of January 2012. 20th grand finale is just today! Do not miss it. It is only the biggest charity event in Poland, gathering millions and helps to sponsor medical equipment for polish hospitals.

Orchestra has started 20 years ago under charismatic front man Jurek Owsiak. Since then they gathered huge amount of money and literally millions, which went to transfer polish medical system. It’s a different cause every year but most of the money goes to support children’s hospitals. With over 120 000 volunteers working around the clock in every first week of January it is the biggest event of such kind. Orchestra is a series of events actually. Most recognizable are concert held in every bigger town, but there are also accompanying events such as austions, marathons, fashion events, and many more.

The biggest concert is as always in Warsaw, but also Krakow has it’s advantages. It all starts in the Main Market Square at 6 pm. Artists are Mats Meguenni, Via Rei, CF98, DMTA, The Car Is On Fire. Be ready and enjoy.

Student Song Festival in Krakow 2011

If you’d like to to take part in one of the most important and prestigious Polish competitions, here’s a great option for you! This year, the Student Song Festival will be held for the 47th time! Of course it is going to happen in Krakow.

The first edition of festival was launched in 1962. It’s the event which has helped many polish starts to start or develop their careers. Among them, lets mention couple names such as Maryla Rodowicz, Marek Grechuta, Ewa Demarczyk and Jacek Kaczmarski. All of them nowadays are amongst the greatest inspiration and idols for thousands of people, especially in Poland. The event is an opportunity for tallented students to show their talents in front od audience and jury. It lasts three days. One of evenings will feature french songs. Before the announcement of final verdict, all of participants will be able to present on stage with the repertoire which they choose themselves. 22th of November will be held the ceremonial event on which the results are planned to be proclaimed. The following attraction of this evening is the finale concert.

The Student Song Festival is the source of polish artistry tradition. It constitutes both fun and entertainment for those who have their education in progress as well as those who finished it long ago. Feel free to check it out!

This years grand finale is dedicated to commemoration of Andrzej Zaucha – great polish songwriter and composer tragically killed 20 years ago. Performing in the show – Ola Szomańska, Ryszard Rynkowski, Andrzej Sikorowski, Grzegorz Turnau, Janusz Radek, Jacek Kotlarski, Michał Kaczmarek and Dżamble. The Divine Comedy 2011 International Theatre Festival in Krakow

Today’s entry will benefit mostly theatre enthusiasts. But even if you’re not really interested in theatre, there’s another must see for you in case you happen to be in Krakow this winter. Who wouldn’t like to attend some heavenly entertainment? The Divine Comedy International Theatre Festival will surely be a great form of spending your spare time in Krakow! After all the city is called the cultural capitol of Poland.

We proudly invite you to visit the 3rd edition of Festival, which will be held this December, from the beginning till 12th of the month.

The most interesting thing about this event is that the whole plan of festival was divided to three parts called: Inferno, Purgatorio and Paradiso. First of them is the competition gathering the best Polish shows of the past season. The grand prize is the statuette of the Divine Comedian. Purgatorio is the part about project “Life in theatre”. This one includes many accompanying events. Paradiso is the section of the festival dedicated to young directing artists. Many of them have been already widely acclaimed!

I’m sure you’ll enjoy each of the festivals’ parts. The only thing you have to spare is your free time. Hopefully you have a lot of it.

At the festival we will have an opportunity to attend several shows: Jan Klata’s famous Wedding of Count Orgaz, Sobociński’s show of Hamlet based on Shakespeare’s creation and other plays such as Antelli, The Three Sisters, The Living Room or those based on Franz Kafka’s novels.

18th final of The Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity is approaching. Remember the date – 10th of January 2010 – it’s going to be even bigger than last year. Over 300 volunteers are preparing to hit the streets of Krakow and help with this biggest charity event in Poland. Be prepared to empty your wallet and help children with ontological diseases. Christmas in Krakow?

Christmas in Krakow? Why not it’s the most beautiful time to visit Poland. Of course it comes with a price – you need to be ready to make your peace with snow, hopefully lots of snow. Wouldn’t hurt to be able to accept that you need to wear a hat and warm clothes. But – on the plus side, Krakow is beautiful. The Market Square offers unique gifts and mulled wine. And – last but not the least – polish people tend to get even more friendly on Christmas. But let’s start from the beginning.

Winter and Christmas time is specially significant for the Poles. In the old times whole families would spend this time together. On the 6th of December adults would give gifts to children – this custom is called Gwiazdka (a star). You would also expect to find a second batch of gifts under the Tree (pl. Choinka) on the Christmas Day. Usually families would eat very official dinner when the first star came to the sky. Then continue celebrating and they would sing Christmas carols. Those are especially beautiful in polish. People would go to a midnight mass called Pasterka.

The Christmas day and the next day are usually off work and most people would celebrate it with their families, relatives and friends. Nowadays when you spent more time with friends rather than with family it still remained that Christmas time is when you are supposed to actually get together with your family. It is a it different to how western European Christmas tradition has evolved. Nevertheless you can still expect all the culture places and going out places to be open. So – go to Kazimierz, go to Krakow’s old town – plenty to do and lots of excitements are awaiting you.

Oscar Schindler’s factory to be opened to public this Spring.

The famous emalien factory located in Kazimierz – which witnessed how one man – German businessman Oscar Schindlers, saved thousands of Jewish citizens of Krakow is going to be open to public as a museum. Made famous by Oscar winning Steven Spielberg film ‘Schindler’s List’ went through complete refurbishment and now is going to serve to commemorate bravery and heroism. We strongly recommend visiting the place. We’ll be there to report and report on it.

17th Jewish Cultural Festival – June 2007

17th Jewish Culture Festival will be held between June 23 and July 1 2007. For people being in Krakow at that time it’s definitely an event not to be missed. Especially the final concert which every year takes place at Szeroka Street right in the heart of Kazimierz, formerly Jewish quarter of Krakow. As for Jewish culture it’s one of the best known events like that. Artists are amongst the best. Many events accompanying – lectures, films screenings, workshops, dance classes.

If you’re up for an active time off maybe renting a bike would be good option for you. In Krakow there is at least three companies giving you the opportunity of both renting bikes and bikes tours. We recommend Eccentric Bikes because of their wide and developing offer. You don’t have two or three rusty bikes to choose as it’s often in the case of their competitors. You have four different types of bikes! ‘City bikes’ are new but traditionally looking while ‘beach cruisers’ look hip and trendy with their green, glossy finish. ‘Tandems’ provide double pleasure, and ‘Penny Farthing Cycles’ are the most weird but only they make you feel like a XIX century gentleman. Quite a thrill and also good as a pick up line with beautifull strangers. Also available ‘Recumbent Bikes’ in which you almost lay on your back. Really weird experience to ride a bike in a horizontal position attracting attention of literally everyone. We strongly recommend to try.

BUNKIER SZTUKI presents international modern art, in a wide cultural context. It is open to multimedia art, video and performance. The events it organizes take place on several interrelated levels. Exhibitions, series of meetings, presentations and discussions, film projections and artistic actions in the public space (such as the “Vectors” action in the urban space of Nowa Huta) are organized here.

The gallery has numerous achievements in the exhibiting and publishing field. Over the nearly 40 years of its history BUNKIER SZTUKI has presented such esteemed artists as: Bruno Schulz, Tony Cragg, Krzysztof Penderecki, Hans Arp, Marta Deskur, Tadeusz Kantor, Stanislaw Dróżdż, Katarzyna Kozyra, Rafał Bujnowski, Wilhelm Sasnal, Mirosław Bańka, Hanne Darboven, Jarosław Kozłowski, Andrzej Pawłowski, Zofia Kulik, Leon Tarasewicz, Alicja Żebrowska, Jadwiga Sawicka, Marek Chlanda, Grzegorz Sztwiertnia, Andreas Kaufmann.

The gallery promotes artists connected with the Krakow’s scene. It helps to get young artists of to a good start. It is known for its exhibitions of the works of classic artists from around the world and from Poland. It organizes exhibitions presenting the condition of contemporary painting, video projects. It hosts problem exhibitions reflecting on the topic of the institution of the gallery itself, the exhibitions, the identity of artists, curators and the strategy of artistic action in today’s world. Most of the exhibitions are accompanied by extensive catalogues and discussion meetings with the participation of critics.

Meetings in the BUNKIER SZTUKI (a bunker of arts) Club constitute an extremely important area of activity. Presentations, discussions and film projections are held on an average of 3 times a week and make up the following cycles: Women artists behind the camera, Interpretations, Institutions, I am, therefore I create, Crirtic on the edge of a nervous breakdown, Movies, Gender Politics, Pre-texts, Philosophical Dictionary, Student versus Professor, Van Gogh’s ear.

BUNKIER SZTUKI employs experienced curators (of the exhibitions, the portal, the Club), it has its own technical crew. The exhibition space, divided into three floors gives the possibility of adjusting the interior to the demands of any exposition. Various types of lighting can be used.
