Krakow is a place known for small romantic cafeterias, cozy places just for a special date. But … it’s good to feel like a star… okay, at least sometimes.

If you are looking for something more than just a cup of coffee and want to feel the atmosphere of Krakow you should visit Nowa Prowincja, a famous cafe at Bracka Street 3-5.

What is so special about Nowa Prowincja? Certainly, it has a very special atmosphere, a little ’something’ that calls you back and allows to feel like in a nice, familiar place. Slightly dimmed, with tables and chairs touched by time and a secret, cosy entresol allowing to hide from the more open space in the main room. Some pieces of junk that make up the décor resemble the old attic, which has this specific, familiar feel. It allows you to relax and feel at ease – the best way for preparing to fully enjoy the taste of coffee or hot chocolate (supposedly the best in Krakow), and these are just fabulous. Also, you can savor your beverage (and delicious cake) outside and watch the city life of Bracka Street.

What is more, there is always a chance to meet somebody famous here as it is a place popular among many artists. After all, the owner of Nowa Prowincja is Grzegorz Turnau – well known polish composer, pianist, poet and singer – formerly associated with Piwnica pod Baranami and Piotr Skrzynecki. The cafe also organizes meetings with some writers and artists. To find out more about these, ask for the schedule at the bar.

Address: Bracka 3-5 (according to one of Turnau’s song ‘a street where it always rains…’)

If you have a sweet tooth or just have a craving for some sweets why not try something different and visit the smallest sweets’ manufacture in Poland, situated nearby Main Square in Krakow. The owners take pride in being number 8th among European sweets’ manufactures. Have a look!

What is so special about this place is the fact that it offers handmade caramels made right in front of the customers. The whole production is based on the 17th century recipes. The sweets come in many different shapes but also you can order a shape of your own choice. Not to mention a wide variety of flavours like lemon, apple, amaretto or even thyme.

Apart from just purchasing candies you can participate (for free) in a demonstration of sweets’ production which takes place everyday at 5 pm. After the show you can try some of these lovely (and still warm) candies. It really is a special treat whether you have or not children.

As always the best way to learn about this sweet paradise is to visit its magical place at Gołębia Street 3. The shop is open everyday from 11 am to 7 pm.

Tired of eating fast food and looking for better options to fight your hunger? You should definitely visit one of the vegetarian restaurants VEGA. They are located in the centre of city, on Krupnicza (that one is located on our map of Krakow) and Św. Gertrudy streets.

If you think that vegetarian cuisine is mostly based on salad mixed with… salad, you will be surprised. VEGA offers you a wide choice of delicious soups, healthy meals and casseroles. The restaurant dishes out also traditional courses in meat-free way. For example, dumplings filled with cabbage and mushrooms, berries or popular „russian dumplings”- it seems that the hardest part of visit in VEGA is to choose the meal amongst all these delights!

People with a sweet tooth will be satisfied with many kinds of cakes, smoothies, pancakes or fruit cocktails to taste. The place is furnished in rather old-fashioned way, it makes cosy and pleasant atmosphere. In addition to nice music, it is great to have a relaxing time at. Sometimes in the afternoon it might be hard to find a table inside- groups of people decide to come to VEGA for lunch or dinner. Unfortunately, they always seem to be hungry in exactly the same thime as you. If you’re determined, you can always find a place to sit elsewhere. But if you’re not willing to wait or stand in the crowd, you should come to the restaurant a little bit later, so you wouldn’t be forced to wait in a line.

So, if you don’t want to eat yet another shish kebab again? Good decision. Go to one of VEGA locals and try various flavours of meat-free cuisine.

They have opened several places in major polish cities offering the best dishes, all trendy vegetarian and all of that at rather reasonably prices. The one in Krakow’s city centre is quite small, but really cozy and pleasant.

Greenway’s menu consists of soups, main courses, pancakes, deserts and hot and cold soft drinks. Touch of indian cuisine mixed with mexican and polish influences can be spotted right away in main dishes. Don’t miss on deserts though – those are delicious. Prices are ok as for Japanese restaurant – we have to remember – it’s fancy, even posh and that goes with the price. But most of all it’s delicious so treat yourself. To not oversell I just want to write that house speciality is Ebi furai i.e. shrimps fried in garlic butter served with a wheat and buckwheat macaroni. Maybe one more remark – it’s good quality.

To all fans of Italian food staying in or passing through Krakow – gather around and listen: One of the best Italian food we’ve had tasted was here in Krakow. A place called La Strada Restaurant has opened just couple of years ago but managed to surprise us with delicious italian dishes since.

Amongst plenty of traditional, and more experimental Italian dishes there are couple of pearls. All the starters looked good – but there was one called La Strada prepared with smoked chicken fresh tomatoes, lettuce, broad bean, soy sprouts and cheese which made the biggest impression.

Main dishes are not just pastas and pizzas – there is huge selection of meat dishes such as pork loin covered with our heavenly chanterelle sauce and 4 really good fish dishes. Unfortunately we couldn’t finish with a dessert – there are just three of them – all very standard, but coffee we had instead was great.

Surprisingly for an Italian restaurant they don’t have nice selection of wine – big minus. But, for the amateurs of strong liquors there is plenty to choose from.

Right between Miodowa Street and Starowislna Street in the former Mykva building, it is just 70 meters from the famous Remuh Synagogue. With its special atmosphere, artistic climate, live concerts of klezmer music and finest cuisine it is unique place and many think it reassembles the pre-World War II tradition of Jewish Kazimierz.

KLEZMER HOIS is a small Hotel able to accommodate up to 30 guests but also a fine restaurant providing the taste of original Jewish cuisine. Customers can choose amongst many starters, soups, main dishes and deserts. Make sure you try their beetroot soup with cabbage rolls or broth with matza balls. Amongst many delicious main dishes we recommend their Turkey with Almonds or Chicken in Honey and Ginger Sauce. Tasty dessert would accomplish such meal. Occasional live klezmer music makes it a really genuine experience. Afterwards you can take a nice walk over the Kazimierz, visit Galicia Jewish Museum or one of many synagogues.

Chlopskie Jadlo – Peasant cuisine – is one of the most well-known culinary destinations in Krakow. Well known amongst local people, sort of fashionable for the members of newly created middle class working specialists, and more and more popular amongst tourists. Styled to resemble peasant cuisine, does it really well. The food is simple and delicious. Some of the basic things – such as really tasty sausages, are beign prepared specially for the chain of Chlopskie Jadlo. They are done according to old polish recepies and not available anywhere else. You can have a taste of traditional polish cuisine – dishes such as ’schabowy z kapusta i ziemniakami’ – fried cutlet with baked cabbage and potatoes, golabki – meet and buckwheat wrapped with cabbage leaf, and plenty of others. Make sure you try rosol – chicken soup. If you are vegetarian pancakes would do you great. All of that served in really huge portions, but children menu is also available.

Most of all, the insides are styled to resemble polish cottage houses from XIXth century. The ambiance is really superbly done. the one pointed on our interactive map of Krakow is the outlet located right in the middle of the town, on Jana Street, right next to Main Marker Square.

We strongly recommend. A must see place – I bet you’ve never eaten so well.

Another one from the very long book of places you will not see if you keep to your guide’s recommendations or popular guide books. It’s not a restaurant per se – more like a fast food stand. Located in the very heart of Kazimierz, in the middle of a grocery market square, right next to popular pubs and clubs such as Singer or Alchemia, is a very special place for many reasons. It’s not a restaurant, more like a fast food facility with no places to sit down. It’s menu can be put on one rather small piece of paper. Even though, most of what they sell are roasted baguettes with different toppings (pol. zapiekanka), and burgers, there is a never-ending queue every night.

People of Krakow enjoy fantastic food prepared personally by Endzior – owner himself. He opens every day and supports people partying in Kazimierz with his specialities. There is nothing as good as a night out with a pack of friends, couple of beers in a pub and a crunchy zapiekanka with salami, or chicken. From time to time Endzior offers some more special food such as bigos (a stew made of cabbage and meat) or golonko (fried pigs joint).

There are plenty of chinese styled restaurants in Krakow. Most of them are located in the city center, but there are also some in more distant locations. Basically – chinese restaurants provide relatively cheap but decent food. For just a bit more that a cost of hamburger with chips in local cheeps shops (which are mostly of really poor quality in Poland) you can eat big, nutrient and simply tasty meal. In most of them you can choose between 5 or more soups and plenty of main dishes. Amongst those you usually have the variety of chicken, duck, beef and fish dishes. All of them tasty and prepared in place by a real chinese chef.

One of the oldest and most distinguishable of chinese styled restaurant is located in the city center near by the Bagatela Theatre. It is slightly more expensive than others, but an equivalent of 20 PLN should cover a big two dishes meal for one person. What also differs it from other places like that is more secluded location, better service and food quality. Additionally several desserts are in the menu. From main dishes I especially recommend chicken chinese which is always fresh an tasty.

Krakow has many places where you can eat. No matter what you require will be delivered. Plenty of possibility to explore foreign style restaurants – there are chinese, italian, brasilian, and other. Equally many places serving traditional polish food, not mentioning fast foods on every corner of every street.

For people interested in discovering uniqueness of Krakow and it`s rare style we suggest a place which is not a restaurant per se, but more like a relict of communism or even nightmare from George Orwells book. The place is called “Bar mleczny pod Temidą” and it`s located in the heart of Krakow at Grodzka Street. During communistic times “bar mleczny” (direct translation – milky bar) was a government owned place to sell as many fast meals as possible. Something like a Communistic Fast Food – a McDonalds for working class, always hungry people, students who wouldn`t have much money or homeless people. After such times places like that became famous for cheep and good meals, so the same class of people would eat there. In this particular one you can still see an university lecturer along with students, or people straight from work. Food remained good and really cheap, maybe not the most sophisticated but really tasty. What has to be added to differentiate this place is very nice service. There is nothing like still present in polish shops and restaurants sweet “WHAT do you want?” at the entry. The staff is friendly and helpful.

Something worth seeing before completely extincts.

<g:plusone size="medium" count="1" href="http://www.roomwithaviewkrakow.com/restaurants/milky-bar-pod-temida.html"></g:plusone>

Probably the best restaurant in Krakow, certainly the most prestigious. Opened in 1945 and continuously serving quality food since. Offers nice view on Sukiennice and St. Mary Basilica, but most of all it’s traditional polish dishes. Amongst them Marinated pork sirloins in wild mushroom sauce, Old-Polish sour soup with smoked bacon, goose breast fillet, not mentioning set of exciting desserts. Prices start with around 70 PLN for two dishes meal. It’s not cheap, but quality simply justifies it.

According to historians in 1364 a well-known merchant, Mikolaj Wierzynek, was the host of a feast in honour of the European emperors and kings invited to Krakow by the Polish King Kasimir the Great. They met to celebrate the wedding of Kasimir the Great’s granddaughter – Elisabeth of Pommerania with Charles IV, The Holy Roman Emperor. It is believed that the Kings of Denmark, Cyprus, and Hungary received the gold plates on which they had eaten in order to commemorate this event.

The house changed it’s ownership many times since the Feast but it’s significant that today’s restaurant is located right where it happened, thus the name to commemorate it.
