But because of it’s proximity – it takes 30 minutes by car – it is often counted to Krakow’s touristic attractions. Wieliczka is internationally known for unique and impressive Salt Mine which has been in continuous operation since the 13th century, and still produces table salt. It is one of the world’s oldest operating salt mines (the oldest is at Bochnia, Poland, 20 kilometers from Wieliczka).

The mine reaches down to a depth of 327 meters, and is over 300 km long. It’s a complicated labyrinth of small paths leading to huge rooms turned into a museum halls.
The Wieliczka salt mine features a 3.5-km tourist route. That includes statues of historic and mythic figures, all sculpted by miners out of the rock salt. Even the crystals in the chandeliers are fashioned of salt, as well as the walls which gives extra fun especially to the children. Also featured are beautifully carved chambers, chapels, an underground lake, and exhibits on the history of salt mining. The mine is justly referred to as “the underground salt cathedral of Poland.”
The legend connected to Wieliczka Salt Mine is that it started to be salty after suicide of princess Wanda who did not want to marry a prince of German nationality.
In 1978 the Wieliczka salt mine was placed on the original UNESCO roster of World Heritage Sites.

The ticket costs 12 Euro, but it’s definitely something unique and worth visiting. Simply something for anyone to enjoy. Be prepared for something unique!
